EPFL startup Insolight has developed solar modules with a validated efficiency of 29%, a world record. Today’s mainstream modules typically show efficiency of 17-19%. Insolight’s patented optical system concentrates light onto an array of tiny space-grade photovoltaic cells. By significantly boosting the energy yield, Insolight’s panels will deliver more energy and higher investment returns compared with mainstream PV modules. While commercial rooftops will strongly benefit from this performance boost, the modules are also ideally suited for applications in combination with agriculture (“Agrivoltaics”) thanks to their translucency. The EU supports Insolight's efforts with a non-dilutive EUR 10.6 million grant from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
